Finance, construct, operate, and maintain a children’s hospital for Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust

The Children’s Ark PFI project is a 30 year concession to finance, construct, operate, and maintain a new children’s hospital within the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals’ main site in Brighton. The new building replaces the 130 year old existing Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital located elsewhere in the City. The client is Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Comprised of 100 beds, diagnostic facilities, ambulatory care, teaching areas, two operating theatres and an X-ray facility, the design is known as the “Children’s Ark” due to its shape and appearance.

It is a landmark building, highly visible from the Brighton waterfront, and one of very few dedicated children’s hospitals in the country.

The £37 million project reached financial close in June 2004. Construction was undertaken by Kajima Construction Europe (UK) Limited. The hospital became operational in May 2007. The service agreement is for Hard FM only and is with Integral UK Limited, the Trust being responsible for Soft FM.
